PAWS Wagfest 2013 – Pet Photography on Bainbridge Island

Sunday, September 15 was the date for this year’s PAWS Wagfest at Battle Point Park on beautiful Bainbridge Island! It is one of my favorite events, so my enthusiasm was up, despite having attended ANOTHER of my faves, Harbor Hounds in Gig Harbor, just the day before, and logging 7 hours of driving time (mainly for childcare) in just over 24 hours. The weather was a bit dicey, and we ended up having some early thunder and rain, although the big nasties held off until later in the day. Huge shout out to my friend Jen Vroom, who attended both events with me, and brought coffee! I was so impressed with the stoic canines who were nonplussed by the thunder, and their human companions who came out to support PAWS of Bainbridge and all the good work they do for the animals. There was a terrific group of vendors and I saw several of my fave fourfoots – notably Dexter, Tucci and Casey, who were featured on my acrylic samples, and made some new friends, too! Super fun events included contests for best costume, waggiest tail, look-a-like, biscuit stacking (human), tricks, pie eating (canine), and the ever popular races. Voting was held and awards were also presented to winners of the fundraising Picture Your Pet contest, and those who raised the most for PAWS. Generally I am near my booth, photographing the attendees, but in this case was asked to document the events – I had only brought one lens, but the images will give you an idea of the fun that is had, and I hope to see you there next year!

Harbor Hounds 2013! Kitsap County Photographer ~ Four Foot Photography

OHMYGOODNESSSOMUCHFUN! Saturday, September 14, 2013 was Harbor Hounds, put on annually by Gig Harbor Mid-Day Rotary. It is a FANTASTIC event, and I so enjoy all the doggehs and their people. Bichons, Pugs, Frenchies, Danes, Newfies, Goldens, Bulldogs, Poodles, Spectacular “ComboPacks”, Shepherds (White, Australian, German), Chinese Crested, Boston Terriers, Yorkies, Spaniels, Chihuahuas, Shelties, Beagles, and even a Bedlington Terrier!  I loved all the stories of rescue and devotion. I will be posting some of the cuties on Facebook as well – please visit and like the page at www.FB.com/FourFootPhotography – feel free to tag yourself, share, like and use your dog’s image – please do not crop out the logo, or give photo credit to Four Foot Photography, this really helps me promote my {very small} business! Gig Harborites (and Pierce & Kitsap Counties in general!) ROCK! Here are some of the furry faces as they came by, thanks for coming out to support this terrific charity event!

Of course, if you would like to order a photographic print, I would be happy to remove leashes and enhance the image and pop it in the mail! info@FourFootPhotography.com

Zander the Magnificent

Sue, Zander’s mom, called me after seeing some of my work on display at Kitsap Veterinary Clinic. Zander is okay, but needed to see Dr Sarah Buck for an eye injury – check him out in his camo “Doggles” below, because you just can’t be too careful. Oh, and he has red ones, too.  Zander is getting older, and Sue wanted me to create a portrait of him that captures his fun-loving spirit, and celebrates the huge joy he has been to her and his dad, Harry, since they rescued him.  While he is as poised as a professional model and has the looks to be one, Zander is first and foremost a cherished member of the family. He is humble and well-mannered, great with the grandchildren, and enjoys the spectacular life he deserves, complete with RV vacations and his very own fire hydrant (no, really!!!) one of his human brothers installed for him when the back yard foliage had to be removed to protect him from damaging his eyes crashing through the bushes – is that not the coolest thing?  Sue always has a towel handy, but I managed to sneak a shot with a spit bubble, which is the image my kiddos ask to see the most. He is a big boy, but if I could have tucked him in my pocket and snuck him home, I sure would have. I like to think Zander is fond of me, but then I am the treat and attention lady. His devotion to Sue runs deep and true, and I am a better person for having witnessed it.

Sue and Harry have invested plenty of time and training and love into Zander, and it has paid off richly, with many years of companionship and devotion. I love, love the people and pets I meet as a pet and portrait photographer in Kitsap County and beyond. *LOVE*

Casey Girl!

I was so thrilled to receive a call from Casey’s parents, inquiring about a birthday photography session for their girl, about to turn 4. I always get excited about an upcoming session (and a doggie birthday party? Yes, please!), but this was a relief as well, since Casey’s mum had called Four Foot Photography the year before, I called back and left a message, and then did not hear from them again. This happens every once in a while, and I know that sometimes people change their minds, etc, but it always leaves me wondering if I did/said something wrong (artist-types can be a little sensitive!). Turns out, they had taken Casey to a studio for her 3rd birthday portrait – they have her portrait made on her birthday every year, isn’t THAT awesome – but we had met at PAWS of Bainbridge Wagfest, and they wanted a pet photographer for birthday #4, so it was my turn! Casey’s birthday is February 10, and I arrived at their beautiful Bainbridge Island home, balloons in hand, to meet the dog of the hour. A cake had been procured from a doggie bakery on the other side of the water, where Casey goes to swim therapy once a week, since having surgery as a young pup. Now my clients, bar none, are people who genuinely love their pets and value their place in the family. Casey’s parents impressed me even further, with the planning, care, training and spectacular life they are giving her. She is, as Standard Poodles are, VERY smart, and they keep her intellectually stimulated, as well as exercised, socialized and loved. So without further ado, I give you, Casey’s Fourth Birthday:

I had such a great time, I know I am being greedy, but I hope they call me next year! Your parents love you, Casey Girl, and so do I.

My Days Do Not Always Go The Way I Have Planned…

So for sure I should be working on my sales taxes/website/organization/laundry today, but I HAPPENED to have the opportunity to photograph a beautiful girl, and am so pleased to introduce Bear! Bear goes into the backstory a bit – she was rescued by Larry and Michelle Ransom, and their boys Jake & Jordan when she was just a pup, found by the side of the road with her momma, when Larry was coaching at Pilchuk Veterinary Hospital. The year I started by business Bear was the 3rd spoke in a pretty tight pack – Jake and his girls, Bear and Jessie, a gorgeous yellow lab. Jake is a pretty phenomenal kid, and happens to be my nephew. It was my plan to do a shoot with the three of them – so adorable. Sweet Jessie, however, was discovered to have cancer and died suddenly at the age of 7, which was a terrible shock. Of course I felt terrible that I hadn’t yet taken the images I could (and still can) so clearly see in my head. Regrets are the worst! This went down a matter of months after my niece, Rachel had lost her beautiful 2 year old pup. The two events in 2 connected families so close together really solidified for me the desire to photograph pets with the people who love them, to record and tell their stories visually, and honor their place in our lives. We all know we have such a short time with our four footed companions, but the truth is, we really don’t know how short that time can be. My own dogs prior to the current furry little monster lived to 19, 18 and 14 1/2 years, but I can tell you, it didn’t seem long enough. So the chance to snap a few of Bear today, who is young and healthy and a sweet, darling soul, lifted my spirits. She rocked her shoot – isn’t she delish?

Some Favorites from 2012!

Thanks so much for the great year – I so enjoyed meeting such fantastic people and photographing your gorgeous pets! It has been a truly wonderful year for Four Foot Photography, and I look forward to 2013 being full of growth, learning, challenges and an ever-widening circle of people and pets I am lucky to know. I feel abundantly blessed as Kitsap County’s most passionate pet photographer and am seriously jazzed about capturing memories and creating personalized art for your homes, as well as helping adoptable dogs and cats find their forever homes through pet portraiture and social media. Oh, and I have some crazy-fun ideas and beautiful new products to introduce as well… Happy, Happy New Year!

The cat’s out of the bag…

Oh, of course I’m just kidding – no felines were harmed OR bagged in the super-secret super-spy set up that Roper and Levi’s mom arranged as an epic Christmas gift for her husband. I LOVE a surprise, and this one was so much fun! Next time, though, I want theme music… Now that the plan has been executed, the gifts unwrapped and oh yes, dad was surprised and thrilled (I KNOW – can you believe he did not suspect she would hire a pet photographer and that he would be receiving a 20×30 canvas of his dogs?) – NOW I can finally reveal the amazing session these golden boys (and their kitty co-horts) provided.

Aren’t they gorgeous? And just as sweet as they are good lookin’!

Giving Back

2012-12-22_0014

On Tuesday, as I do approximately every other week, I was at Kitsap Humane Society  photographing adoptable dogs. I am in good company in this endeavor – many, many pet photographers and other volunteers do this as a way to give back, and certainly there are plenty of organizations, breed rescues, etc that could use the help – there is so much to do with feeding, exercising, training, making arrangements, paperwork, fund raising, cleaning up, etc. It can be tricky to photograph shelter pets, as they are in unfamiliar surroundings and can be confused or come from abusive or neglectful situations. I feel strongly that quality images are vital in this social media age to helping these homeless pets get to the people that are perfect for them, and who may not even realize they need that four-foot as much as he or she needs them. Just yesterday as I was addressing  Christmas cards 2012-12-22_0015 (oh yeah, I AM that far behind) I found the newspaper clippings from (gulp) 1997 that attest to the power of a photograph – the crazy old Beagle that stole my heart and “lived out his twilight years” –  nearly 9 of them – with us. I have always been overly sensitive, and that was the one time I physically visited the Cowlitz County shelter, other than to drop off towels and blankets and food. I was only able to go specifically for that particular dog, not to pick one from among many, or even to walk them.  I hear this from a lot of people, that it is too sad, they just can’t stand to see all the need. For sure that is true, although I find  it helps me to have a specific mission, and I cannot afford another pet at this time, and also my husband would leave me if I brought home another critter. All of my adult life I have supported animal rescue and re-homing – when we each had secure, full time jobs with benefits and no 2 footed children I wrote a check every month to the local humane society, and regularly to the national organization and specific rescues, like Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, ASPCA, etc. Now that financial resources are slim, I am honored to be able to help by taking and sharing photographs, and contribute $$ or supplies whenever I can. My kid-free time is limited (when both my kiddos are in school full time I plan to go more frequently), so while a few hours every few weeks at the shelter isn’t much, it is time away from my paid work and family, there is travel time, editing time, gas and expensive equipment that has a lifespan and must be maintained.

Your point, you might ask? Well this Tuesday I lost it and was just overwhelmed  – not only because I wanted to bring each and every one of those sweet babies home (you, too, Mr. I-can-jump-to-the-top-of-my-kennel), or how patiently they waited just to go outside and have some human contact, or how they looked right inside me (Sir Chance you are a beautiful soul)  but just by how many people give so unselfishly – TIME walking dogs and cleaning kennels every day and every week, posting to Petfinder, Craigslist and Facebook; MONEY donated at the auction, pictures with Santa and throughout the year, FOOD dropped off, LOVE with every adoption – nearly 4000 this year just at KHS – and PRAYER. And then, multiply that by thousands of animal rescue organizations throughout the country, then multiply THAT by people helping other people – dropping everything to fly to disaster-affected areas and clean up, rebuild and help out, people in the trenches with the homeless, the mentally ill, the elderly, foster children, visiting the sick and addicted, supporting soldiers returning from overseas – it goes on and on. My 7 year old was recently invited to a birthday party where the invitation requested donations to KHS instead of gifts! I am simultaneously amazed by the amount of need AND the amount of giving. I happened to lose it in front of two ladies who work at the shelter every day, and I felt like a huge wimp for doing so, but they were so kind, even though the emotional cost to me pales in comparison to what they must experience. Whatever I can do has been graciously accepted and it is fantastic to see so many dogs and cats being fed, sheltered and loved, then going to loving, permanent homes, where they are able to rebound from their neglect or abandonment so quickly. If you haven’t already done so, find and embrace your passion, give back in a way that is meaningful to you. If you already are, know you are appreciated and will get back many times over what you put in.

Did I cry all the way home? You bet I did. Will I be going back? Wild horses (which are available, BTW!) couldn’t keep me away.

Bear and Barley

I met Rob and Pattie at Bethel Animal Hospital’s Second Chance Carnival in Port Orchard, sharing my tent for some shade, as Barley (a Second Chance guy himself) is a Saint Bernard, so it was much too hot for him. They decided they wanted to do a session with Barley and his best buddy, Bear (I swear, I didn’t strong-arm them!). We met at Manchester State Park, and had a spectacular time with those big, furry darlings. Here are some of my favorites:

Thank you, Rob and Pattie! I look forward to meeting the rest of your crew!

I’m IN!

One of the things at the top of my list when I started my business was to give back in some way. There has been no shortage of opportunity there, but I am very excited that I had my first session photographing adoptable animals at the Kitsap Humane Society today. Most of today’s talent today were of the feline variety, but this little guy caught my eye in the lobby, and I made puppy-dog eyes at the staff until I was allowed to photograph him (also he was due for a potty break, but I suspect they were humoring me). Is he not just the cutest little dude? Most likely 1/2 Corgi and 1/2 Jack Russell Terrier, he was just a big bundle of cute in a tiny little package. Those floppy ears! Seriously. I want the first one I saw…epic fail! Let’s get this little guy adopted, quick! Meet Max:
