I had the opportunity to spend a little time with three pretty girls in December – one of them only had 2 feet, but she is wonderful, and here at Four Foot Photography, we do not discriminate!

Juicy little baby…
Introducing Micah, sweet juicy little nugget. Micah was born in January, and we spent a lovely hour or two together, which I am fairly certain I enjoyed more than he did! He joins big brother Levi and spectacular parents Nathan and Jennifer.

Karlee & Victor!
I was suspicious today that something was up! It has since been confirmed that Karlee and Victor are MARRIED as of Friday, February 1st, their 4th anniversary. Again I say, Awwwwww.
If you don’t know Karlee, well, you should! Karlee works at the Gig Harbor Mud Bay store, and is truly delightful from the inside out. She oozes joy (did I get that right, Dad?) and is a spectacular human being. She is also the daughter of one Lisa Ridens, dog trainer extraordinaire at Affordable Dog Training, and another great lady you really should meet. Victor I met for the first time when I photographed them for their holiday card, but I know him to be a hard worker and a soccer player, and based on his winning Karlee’s heart of gold, he has to be quite remarkable as well. Karlee and Victor reside in Bremerton with their two adorable Chihuahuas. Congratulations and best wishes to you both!
My Days Do Not Always Go The Way I Have Planned…
So for sure I should be working on my sales taxes/website/organization/laundry today, but I HAPPENED to have the opportunity to photograph a beautiful girl, and am so pleased to introduce Bear! Bear goes into the backstory a bit – she was rescued by Larry and Michelle Ransom, and their boys Jake & Jordan when she was just a pup, found by the side of the road with her momma, when Larry was coaching at Pilchuk Veterinary Hospital. The year I started by business Bear was the 3rd spoke in a pretty tight pack – Jake and his girls, Bear and Jessie, a gorgeous yellow lab. Jake is a pretty phenomenal kid, and happens to be my nephew. It was my plan to do a shoot with the three of them – so adorable. Sweet Jessie, however, was discovered to have cancer and died suddenly at the age of 7, which was a terrible shock. Of course I felt terrible that I hadn’t yet taken the images I could (and still can) so clearly see in my head. Regrets are the worst! This went down a matter of months after my niece, Rachel had lost her beautiful 2 year old pup. The two events in 2 connected families so close together really solidified for me the desire to photograph pets with the people who love them, to record and tell their stories visually, and honor their place in our lives. We all know we have such a short time with our four footed companions, but the truth is, we really don’t know how short that time can be. My own dogs prior to the current furry little monster lived to 19, 18 and 14 1/2 years, but I can tell you, it didn’t seem long enough. So the chance to snap a few of Bear today, who is young and healthy and a sweet, darling soul, lifted my spirits. She rocked her shoot – isn’t she delish?
Lucky Number 7!
My family has had the EXTREME good fortune of living virtually next door to this family of smart, funny, loyal, caring and thoughtful and real people since before I picked up my first DSLR – if ANYONE should be creating the next generation it is these two (and they’ve not let me down, there are now 5 kiddos in the fold). She’s watched my kids, I’ve watched hers, he’s helped us fix and install things that are beyond us, our boys have been friends as long as they can remember, and our 5 years olds have birthdays 5 weeks a apart. If you’ve been following the blog for a while you will recognize the little bean from her 6 month and 1 year photos. This fall, however, I had the opportunity to photograph all seven of them (that’s 14 feet, if anyone is counting!) for the first time, and I think you will agree they are, beyond their many virtues, just flat out good lookin‘.
It is my fervent wish that with these family photographs I have helped to document their story in a meaningful way. Love you guys! Some Favorites from 2012!
Thanks so much for the great year – I so enjoyed meeting such fantastic people and photographing your gorgeous pets! It has been a truly wonderful year for Four Foot Photography, and I look forward to 2013 being full of growth, learning, challenges and an ever-widening circle of people and pets I am lucky to know. I feel abundantly blessed as Kitsap County’s most passionate pet photographer and am seriously jazzed about capturing memories and creating personalized art for your homes, as well as helping adoptable dogs and cats find their forever homes through pet portraiture and social media. Oh, and I have some crazy-fun ideas and beautiful new products to introduce as well… Happy, Happy New Year!
Giving Back
On Tuesday, as I do approximately every other week, I was at Kitsap Humane Society photographing adoptable dogs. I am in good company in this endeavor – many, many pet photographers and other volunteers do this as a way to give back, and certainly there are plenty of organizations, breed rescues, etc that could use the help – there is so much to do with feeding, exercising, training, making arrangements, paperwork, fund raising, cleaning up, etc. It can be tricky to photograph shelter pets, as they are in unfamiliar surroundings and can be confused or come from abusive or neglectful situations. I feel strongly that quality images are vital in this social media age to helping these homeless pets get to the people that are perfect for them, and who may not even realize they need that four-foot as much as he or she needs them. Just yesterday as I was addressing Christmas cards
(oh yeah, I AM that far behind) I found the newspaper clippings from (gulp) 1997 that attest to the power of a photograph – the crazy old Beagle that stole my heart and “lived out his twilight years” – nearly 9 of them – with us. I have always been overly sensitive, and that was the one time I physically visited the Cowlitz County shelter, other than to drop off towels and blankets and food. I was only able to go specifically for that particular dog, not to pick one from among many, or even to walk them. I hear this from a lot of people, that it is too sad, they just can’t stand to see all the need. For sure that is true, although I find it helps me to have a specific mission, and I cannot afford another pet at this time, and also my husband would leave me if I brought home another critter. All of my adult life I have supported animal rescue and re-homing – when we each had secure, full time jobs with benefits and no 2 footed children I wrote a check every month to the local humane society, and regularly to the national organization and specific rescues, like Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, ASPCA, etc. Now that financial resources are slim, I am honored to be able to help by taking and sharing photographs, and contribute $$ or supplies whenever I can. My kid-free time is limited (when both my kiddos are in school full time I plan to go more frequently), so while a few hours every few weeks at the shelter isn’t much, it is time away from my paid work and family, there is travel time, editing time, gas and expensive equipment that has a lifespan and must be maintained.
Your point, you might ask? Well this Tuesday I lost it and was just overwhelmed – not only because I wanted to bring each and every one of those sweet babies home (you, too, Mr. I-can-jump-to-the-top-of-my-kennel), or how patiently they waited just to go outside and have some human contact, or how they looked right inside me (Sir Chance you are a beautiful soul) but just by how many people give so unselfishly – TIME walking dogs and cleaning kennels every day and every week, posting to Petfinder, Craigslist and Facebook; MONEY donated at the auction, pictures with Santa and throughout the year, FOOD dropped off, LOVE with every adoption – nearly 4000 this year just at KHS – and PRAYER. And then, multiply that by thousands of animal rescue organizations throughout the country, then multiply THAT by people helping other people – dropping everything to fly to disaster-affected areas and clean up, rebuild and help out, people in the trenches with the homeless, the mentally ill, the elderly, foster children, visiting the sick and addicted, supporting soldiers returning from overseas – it goes on and on. My 7 year old was recently invited to a birthday party where the invitation requested donations to KHS instead of gifts! I am simultaneously amazed by the amount of need AND the amount of giving. I happened to lose it in front of two ladies who work at the shelter every day, and I felt like a huge wimp for doing so, but they were so kind, even though the emotional cost to me pales in comparison to what they must experience. Whatever I can do has been graciously accepted and it is fantastic to see so many dogs and cats being fed, sheltered and loved, then going to loving, permanent homes, where they are able to rebound from their neglect or abandonment so quickly. If you haven’t already done so, find and embrace your passion, give back in a way that is meaningful to you. If you already are, know you are appreciated and will get back many times over what you put in.
Did I cry all the way home? You bet I did. Will I be going back? Wild horses (which are available, BTW!) couldn’t keep me away.
Squeeeeee!
Meet Rags, the rescued Bichon/Maltese who is resident happiness and joy for his people. Last week I delivered the album and float wrap from his beautiful Four Foot Photography session, which was a gift from Annmarie to her parents. Rags, although only 7, suffered a devastating back injury earlier this year while on a walk. With a lot of faith and expert veterinary surgery, Rags is now once again the picture of health and the center of the household. Happy Holidays, sweet boy!
Custom Holiday Cards!
Oh my! It’s time for holiday cards! You can laugh if you want to, but I LOVE to send and receive Christmas cards! Social media is fantastic for keeping in touch, but I just can’t wait to hear what friends and family are up to, and if they include a picture, Oh Joy!!! My mom sent out picture cards of me and my sister every year, one year it included Honey, the family dog – perhaps an early lightbulb for me? Several years ago someone mailed my dad their collection of our holiday cards that they had saved over the years! What a gift to have that record. I try to make sure I save one of mine each year for this reason. From the first year we were married, my sweet, tolerant husband put up with me setting up the “family” Christmas card – that first one I sat with a Sharpie and colored in the glowing eyes of Jake, my Cocker Spaniel, and Jasmine, our tabby cat (she’s still around, but was exempted started the year we added a toddler). Over the years, we staged a Hawaiian theme – I bought toddler sized Hawaiian shirts for Jake and his Beagley brother), a sports theme (Rugby shirts!), the classic Fleece Family, Cougar Nation – well, you get the general idea! Is it any wonder I’m a pet photographer? It was not easy to try to get us all in, and DH has long since declared our family card should picture only the children, “Why would I want a record of myself getting older, balder and fatter?” Hmmm, Grinchy! So sometimes I used the timer on the camera, and sometimes we pressed others into service – I will forever hoot when I think of my dad rolling around the floor, going all Annie Leibovitz with the point and shoot. Love you, Dad. This year I am offering custom holiday cards from your Four Foot Photography photo session – let me know which images you would like to include, what you would like to say, colors, size, etc and I will create Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year, Happy Holidays, Kwanzaa or Festivus cards just for you! Prices are approximately $2 per card, depending on one or two sided flat or folded card, the paper you select, etc. Cutout shapes are available – in the samples below I left the cutline to show the shape. There is a pearlized cardstock I adore, but my friend Julie accuses me of wanting to print my images on Human Skin (ie it costs more than glossy photo paper)! There is no profit margin for these cards, but I really, really love for you to have and send them, so Happy Holidays! Here are some samples, recognize anyone you know?
